Mumbai: Relatives of a patient who died a day after childbirth allegedly assaulted four resident doctors from the gynaecology department at Kurla Bhabha Hospital on Wednesday night. All four doctors were women. “My head was banged against the wall and another colleague was slapped. There was a mob of about 100 people,” said one of them. The hospital filed an institutional FIR only the next day, allegedly after hours of pleading by resident doctors. Hospital officials were not available for comment. The mob also damaged hospital property. The 29-year-old patient underwent an emergency C-section on Tuesday and delivered a healthy child. The next night, she complained of abdominal pain and breathlessness. Soon, her blood oxygen levels dropped to 86% and she was shifted to the emergency ward. She was put on a ventilator as she was unconscious. Just an hour later, her condition worsened, and the severity of the situation was explained to her relatives. All efforts to revive her failed, and the patient was declared dead. “We delayed declaring her death out of fear of the mob,” said the resident doctor. In the wake of the attack, Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors demanded better hospital security and CCTV cameras.
