Varanasi: A joint team of Sigra police and the cyber crime cell busted a gang that allegedly assisted cyber fraudsters by providing bank accounts of innocent people for use as mule accounts.Sharing details of the operation, DCP Crime Neetu said on Sunday that acting on a tip-off about the presence of gang members near Om Public School tri-junction in Mahmoorganj area under Sigra police station, the police conducted a raid and arrested six accused, including the gang’s female kingpin and a postman, who helped procure bank kits before their delivery.The arrested accused were identified as Anil Kumar, Kumari, Mala, Umang Kumar, Jitendra Kumar Kannaujiya and Shobhnath. Police said 21 cyber fraud complaints involving a total fraud amount of Rs76,44,477 have been registered against the accused across the country.

According to police, the gang lured poor and needy people with money and changed the permanent addresses on their Aadhaar cards to show them as residents of the Sigra area. Using the forged documents, bank accounts were opened in different banks. With the help of the postman, the gang allegedly obtained bank kits, including cheque books, passbooks and debit cards, even before they were delivered to the account holders. These kits, along with the mobile SIM cards linked to the accounts, were then packed and sent to cyber fraudsters through courier services.Police recovered cheque books, passbooks and debit cards of various banks, six mobile phones, two PAN cards and three forged Aadhaar cards from the accused. A case has been registered at Sigra police station, and further legal action is underway.
