Mumbai: CM Devendra Fadnavis said FDA will be asked to frame standard operating procedures to prevent edible oil adulteration without crippling the business of traditional oil traders and small retailers.FDA’s ban on the sale of loose oil came up for discussion at a cabinet meeting on Monday. Ministers pointed out that selling loose oil is a traditional business and the poor also prefer to buy in small quantities. Fadnavis stressed that govt is seeking a “middle path” to balance strict quality enforcement and the livelihoods of traditional oil vendors and small consumers. “Strict quality needs to be maintained, but at the same time, traditional businesses also need to be protected,” he said.Last week, FDA commissioner Tukaram Mundhe had urged consumers not to buy loose or unsealed edible oil, calling it unsafe, and said a compliance order had been issued for the sector due to violations.
