BSNL is replacing the copper wire running into the home with an optical fibre cable. The old copper wire carried an electrical signal that degraded over distance and was prone to damage and theft. Optical fibre carries a light signal. It does not degrade the same way, is not affected by weather in the same manner, and cannot be stolen for scrap value.
The physical replacement is handled by BSNL authorised channel partners. BSNL General Manager Dharmendra Yadav confirmed in an official statement that the upgrade is carried out with minimal disruption to existing service.
The existing landline number is retained after the upgrade. Subscribers do not need to inform contacts of a number change.
Why This Is a Different Product, Not Just a Faster One
This is the part most subscribers miss.
A copper landline was a voice product. Speed was limited. Broadband was technically possible but capped at around 10 Mbps. The voice call was the primary service.
A BSNL fibre connection is a broadband product with free voice calls included. After the upgrade, speeds range from 30 Mbps at the entry level to 300 Mbps on higher plans, per BSNL’s official announcement on the Tamil Nadu Mission Mode Fiberization project. Voice calls — local and STD, to any network, 24 hours a day — are included in all plans at no extra charge.
The product has not been upgraded. It has been redefined. A household that kept a BSNL landline for occasional voice calls now has access to broadband that competes with fixed wireless and cable internet, on the same connection, with the same number.

What Subscribers Need to Do
In areas where the upgrade is under way, BSNL or its authorised partners will contact existing subscribers to schedule the installation. A new modem, called an Optical Network Terminal, is provided as part of the upgrade at no charge.
Subscribers do not need to apply separately if the upgrade is being carried out in their area. If a subscriber has not been contacted and wants to check availability, the nearest BSNL customer service centre or the BSNL helpline can confirm whether the upgrade has reached their exchange.
