Tirupattur election result: A one-vote victory that stunned Tamil Nadu

The Tirupattur election result has captured national attention, highlighting how every single vote truly matters in a democracy. This razor-thin margin of one vote has turned the constituency into a symbol of electoral unpredictability and voter impact.

According to reports, the contest remained tightly fought from the very beginning. Early rounds saw Periyakaruppan take the lead, maintaining an advantage until around the 16th round. However, from round 17 onwards, Sethupathy steadily gained ground, eventually overtaking his opponent and holding on till the final stages of counting.

Postal ballots and recount drama: How the final result unfolded

The final outcome became even more dramatic with the inclusion of postal ballots. While Periyakaruppan received a higher number of postal votes, the overall tally still tipped in favour of Sethupathy by a margin of one vote. This led to intense scrutiny and re-verification of ballots, as mandated by the Election Commission of India guidelines.

Live Events

District election officer K Porkodi explained, as quoted by The Times of India, that delays in announcing the result were due to technical issues with electronic voting machines and the need to verify rejected postal ballots. Despite objections from counting agents, officials followed due process, ensuring transparency and accuracy in the final declaration.

End of a 20-year stronghold in Tirupattur

Sethupathy’s win marks a significant political shift in Tirupattur, ending Periyakaruppan’s long-standing dominance in the constituency. For over two decades, the DMK leader had maintained a strong hold in the region, making this defeat particularly noteworthy.
Speaking after his victory, Sethupathy credited his success to Vijay, the president of TVK, stating that the result reflects the power of every single vote. His comments have since gone viral, adding to the broader narrative of the election being a turning point in Tamil Nadu politics.

Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026 Results

The Tirupattur result is part of a larger, highly competitive election across Tamil Nadu. With a voter turnout of over 85%, the state witnessed strong public participation. The counting process, which began on May 4, showed fluctuating trends across all 234 constituencies.

TVK emerged as the single largest party, winning 108 seats, while the DMK alliance secured 73 seats and the AIADMK alliance won 53 seats. Despite its strong performance, TVK fell short of the majority mark of 118 seats, meaning it will need support from other parties to form the government.
