Is your blood pressure in a healthy range? The best way to know is to get it checked. But which arm is better for checking your blood pressure – left or right – and get the most accurate reading?
In an August 23 post on X (formerly Twitter), Dr Sudhir Kumar, a neurologist from Hyderabad, explained how to best check your blood pressure and key steps to follow.
Which arm is better for checking blood pressure?
According to Dr Sudhir, blood pressure can be measured in either arm. The neurologist has shared the post after a follower asked him, “Which arm is best for checking blood pressure—left or right? Should BP always be measured on the same arm, and does it matter if there is a difference between the two arms?”
Sharing the key things to remember while measuring blood pressure, Dr Sudhir suggested:
- At the first check, however, it is advisable to measure it in both arms.
- A small difference is common.
However, he noted that if the systolic BP differs by more than 10 to 15 mmHg, one should repeat the measurements to confirm the result. He added, “A persistent difference, especially if large, may occasionally indicate an underlying blood-vessel problem and should be discussed with a physician.” According to him, for future BP monitoring, this means one should use the arm with the higher reading.
BP readings and what they mean
Dr Sudhir also shared what blood pressure readings indicate:
- Normal: Below 120/80 mmHg.
- Elevated: 120–129/<80 mmHg (This means you should focus on lifestyle. Early action – diet and exercise – prevents progression)
⦿ Stage 1 hypertension: 130–139/80–89 mmHg. This requires medical evaluation; lifestyle interventions are essential, and medications may be started based on individual cardiovascular risk.
⦿ Stage 2 hypertension: ≥140/90 mmHg. Typically requires a combination of medication and lifestyle modifications.
⦿ Hypertensive crisis: >180/120 mmHg. Requires immediate medical evaluation.
“The key is not to wait for symptoms; regular checks allow early intervention long before damage occurs,” he stressed.
