The Himalayas have always stood before us like an ancient promise—majestic, snow-covered and seemingly eternal. They have given birth to rivers, sustained civilisations, shaped cultures and supported millions of lives. For generations, we have looked at their peaks with awe, rarely imagining that beneath that silence the mountains themselves could be changing.

Today, however, the Himalayas are speaking in a different language—in melting glaciers, unstable slopes, cloudbursts, landslides, avalanches and rivers that can turn destructive within minutes.

The recent catastrophe in the Nepal–Tibet Himalayan region should therefore not be viewed merely as a tragedy unfolding somewhere far away. For Kashmir, and for the entire Himalayan belt, it should be understood as a warning. The question is no longer whether the Himalayas are changing. The question is whether we are prepared to change with them.

The Himalayas do not recognise political boundaries. A glacier does not know where one country ends, and another begins. A river does not carry a passport. A landslide does not stop at a border. Nature follows geology, gravity, water and weather—not the lines human beings have drawn on maps.

What happens in Nepal can therefore offer lessons to Kashmir. What happens in Uttarakhand can concern Himachal Pradesh. What happens in the high mountains of Tibet can eventually affect valleys and river systems far beyond the immediate point of origin. The Himalayas are one interconnected ecological and geological system, and their risks are interconnected as well.

Kashmir has already received its warnings

The devastating floods of 2014 remain one of the Valley’s most painful memories. We have witnessed cloudbursts, landslides, avalanches and extreme weather events. We have seen roads disappear, bridges collapse and communities become isolated. Yet our response to disasters too often follows the same cycle: catastrophe, rescue, compensation, reconstruction—and eventually forgetfulness.

We cannot afford to forget anymore

The changing climate has added a new dimension to Himalayan vulnerability. Glaciers are retreating, snow patterns are changing, permafrost is becoming unstable and glacial lakes are evolving. These changes can create cascading hazards. A sudden collapse of ice or rock can displace water, trigger a flood or debris flow, block a river and create conditions for an even larger disaster downstream.

A peaceful mountain stream can become a raging torrent within minutes

For Kashmir, this means that glaciers and high-altitude lakes can no longer be regarded merely as scenic features. They are part of a complex and changing risk landscape. Vulnerable glaciers, glacial lakes and mountain slopes need continuous scientific monitoring through satellites, ground surveys, weather stations and hydrological observations. Early-warning systems must be strengthened, and the information generated by scientists must reach local communities in time.

Because a warning that arrives after the flood is not a warning.

It is equally important to rethink what we mean by development in the mountains.

Kashmir needs roads, bridges, hospitals, schools, electricity, communication and tourism infrastructure. Its people need employment and economic opportunity. Development cannot and should not stop. But development that ignores the character of the mountain can ultimately become an invitation to disaster.

A Himalayan slope is not a plain. A riverbank is not automatically safe land. A wetland is not wasteland. A forest is not merely a source of timber. And a glacier is not simply a tourist attraction.

We have become accustomed to asking: Can we build here?

Perhaps the more important question is: Should we build here? 

That distinction could save lives.

Every mountain has a carrying capacity. Every river has a floodplain. Every wetland has a function. Every forest helps stabilise the landscape. When we ignore these natural systems, we may gain land for construction but lose nature’s own protection against disasters.

The Jhelum is a particularly important reminder for Kashmir. It is not merely a river flowing through the Valley; it is part of an intricate network of lakes, wetlands, tributaries and flood channels that regulate water. The floods of 2014 demonstrated the consequences of disrupting this natural system.

A river may remain quiet for years, but it never forgets its floodplain.

If wetlands are encroached upon, drainage channels obstructed and flood-prone areas converted into settlements, we are not eliminating flood risk. We are merely storing it for another day.

Tourism requires similar caution. Kashmir’s extraordinary landscapes attract visitors from across the country and the world, but beauty can sometimes conceal danger. A tourist standing beside a mountain stream may have no idea that a cloudburst or sudden event upstream can transform that stream into a deadly torrent. A traveller entering a remote valley may not know how quickly a landslide can cut off the only road.

Tourism must therefore be accompanied by a safety architecture—weather alerts, evacuation routes, emergency shelters, trained guides, communication systems and clear protocols for extreme weather.

Adventure should never mean ignorance of risk

Another critical lesson is that Himalayan disasters rarely remain isolated. An earthquake can trigger a landslide; a landslide can block a river; a blocked river can form a temporary lake; the collapse of that natural barrier can send a destructive surge downstream.

This possibility of cascading disasters demands a new approach to disaster management. Floods, earthquakes, landslides, avalanches and cloudbursts cannot be treated as completely separate risks. The Himalayas do not operate in government departments, and neither should disaster preparedness.

Kashmir needs integrated mountain-risk planning involving geologists, glaciologists, hydrologists, meteorologists, engineers, environmental experts, disaster-management authorities and local communities. But science must not remain confined to laboratories and government files. It must reach the last village.

People living below vulnerable slopes or along flood-prone rivers should know where they will go when an alarm sounds, which route is safe and where the nearest shelter is located. Schools and hospitals in vulnerable areas should have evacuation plans. Local communities should be trained because, in the first hours of a disaster, ordinary people are often the first responders.

Technology can detect danger. Preparedness saves lives

The entire Himalayan region also needs greater cooperation in disaster preparedness. India, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet and other Himalayan regions may be separated by political boundaries, but they share mountains, weather systems, rivers and ecological vulnerabilities.

Political borders may divide territories. They cannot divide an ecosystem

Information about glaciers, extreme rainfall, river levels, landslides and other hazards should therefore be shared as rapidly as possible. A Himalayan early-warning system must ultimately be guided by the geography of risk, not merely by political maps.

The deeper issue, however, is our attitude towards nature.

For decades, concrete has been treated as a symbol of progress. More roads, more buildings, more tunnels and more commercial infrastructure are often equated with development. But the Himalayas are young, fragile and geologically active. Engineering suitable for the plains cannot simply be imposed upon the mountains.

The Himalayas do not need to be conquered. They need to be understood.

We cannot prevent every earthquake. We cannot stop every cloudburst. We cannot freeze every glacier. But we can decide where we build, how we build and how much pressure we place on fragile mountain ecosystems.

We can protect wetlands.

We can enforce building codes.

We can monitor glaciers.

We can establish early-warning systems.

We can regulate construction in high-risk zones.

We can make tourism safer.

We can prepare communities before disaster strikes.

And above all, we can learn.

The recent tragedy in Nepal and Tibet should therefore become more than an occasion for expressing sympathy. It should become an opportunity for Himalayan introspection.

How many warnings do we need before we change?

How many floods must destroy roads before we build differently?

How many wetlands must disappear before we recognise their value?

How many mountain slopes must collapse before we understand that every slope has a limit?

These are uncomfortable questions, but they must be asked.

Kashmir’s rivers, lakes, forests, glaciers and mountains are not merely scenic assets. They are life-support systems. If we destroy them, we are not simply losing beauty; we are weakening our own protection.

The Himalayas have given us water, forests, fertile valleys, livelihoods, culture and spiritual traditions for thousands of years. The least we can offer in return is restraint. The mountains have stood silently for millions of years. But silence should never be mistaken for consent.

Today they are speaking—in the cracking glacier, the unstable slope, the swollen river and the sudden roar of water.

Kashmir must listen. The entire Himalayan region must listen

Because we may not be able to prevent every natural hazard, but with foresight, science and preparedness, we can prevent many natural hazards from becoming human catastrophes.

And perhaps that is the message the mountains are sending us: The Himalayas may survive our mistakes. The real question is whether we will.
