Ghaziabad: Residents of Shalimar Garden have alleged that only parts of drains are being cleaned, leaving the larger sanitation problem unresolved. They said garbage and silt continue to choke drains, causing waterlogging during the monsoon, foul smell and health hazards.“This partial cleaning yields no practical benefit. Garbage accumulates at the same spot again the very next day, disrupting the entire drainage system. A permanent solution is impossible unless the drain is properly cleaned along its entire length,” said Pradeep Gupta, resident of Shalimar Garden.In a meeting with chief sanitation inspector (CSI) Vinod Singh, Gupta emphasised the need for quality and effective work.

“Merely addressing a specific spot to fulfil a formality does not resolve the issue,” he insisted.Residents said repeated complaints on the issue have yielded no results. They also expressed concerns over the lack of overall sanitation in the area, alleging that sanitation workers add to the problem by dumping garbage and silt back into the drains. They said that workers need to be better trained and that GMC must ensure they understand the importance of maintaining clean drains.“The risks of clogged drains are significant, leading to increased waterlogging and a higher likelihood of disease outbreaks such as dengue and malaria,” said Sanjay Kumar, another resident.Gupta has requested GMC to conduct cleaning and desilting of the entire drainage network in the area, and remove all accumulated garbage and obstructions. Officials should implement effective cleaning practices that focus on the entire affected area rather than just isolated locations, and establish a system of regular inspection and monitoring to prevent future occurrences, residents said.A response from the chief sanitation inspector is awaited. GMC staff, meanwhile, said that the matter will be addressed soon.
