Prayagraj: The Sangam city witnessed a sudden change in weather with heavy rains and winds due to the low depression formed over Bay of Bengal, on Thursday.The sky turned cloudy and soon heavy showers along with cool winds turned the weather pleasant across most parts of the city. Rural areas around Prayagraj too received heavy rain, bringing relief from the warm and sultry weather.The change in weather brought the temperature down, bringing the difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures to just one degree.The change in weather was a result of the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, which crossed the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast and moved inland. India Meteorological Department had forecast rain and thunderstorms over east Uttar Pradesh under the influence of the weather system.The weather in the city this week remained warm rather than exceptionally hot. Thursday, however, saw a sharp change as clouds covered the sky for much of the day and gusty winds swept through the city.The unusual weather pattern was reflected in the day’s temperature figures. According to IMD data, Prayagraj recorded a maximum temperature of 26.8°C on Thursday, while the minimum was 25.8°C — a difference of just 1°C. More strikingly, the maximum temperature fell by around 9°C in a day, from 34.2°C on Wednesday to 26.8°C on Thursday.The city received 26 mm of rainfall on Thursday. While some parts of Prayagraj experienced drizzles, many urban and rural pockets recorded light to heavy rain. The cloudy conditions and winds, which reached 20-27 kmph, continued to keep the weather cool through the day.The change was welcomed by residents who stepped out to enjoy the cool breeze and cloudy weather. “It was a pleasant surprise. The weather had been warm for the past few days, but Thursday felt completely different, especially with the cool breeze,” said Dr Neelam Shukla, a resident of Mundera.Deepak of Mumfordganj said the weather provided a welcome break from the humidity. “The cloudy sky and drizzle made the weather pleasant. People were happy to see the sudden change after the warm conditions,” he said.The weather system is also expected to keep conditions unsettled over the next few days, with IMD forecasting rain or thundershowers in Prayagraj and warnings of heavy to very heavy rain in parts of east Uttar Pradesh.
