Chandigarh: Expressing concern over the damage caused to standing wheat crops due to recent unseasonal rain and hailstorm in Punjab, Congress MLA from the Phagwara assembly constituency, Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, on Sunday, urged the state govt to immediately conduct crop damage assessment (girdawari) and ensure proper compensation to the affected farmers.Dhaliwal said, “Farmers were yet to recover from last year’s floods, and recent rainfall and hailstorms, during the wheat harvesting season, have dealt another blow to them. This double whammy has pushed farmers into a situation of serious financial instability.”He said, “Compensation for the damage caused to paddy crops during the previous floods has still not been provided, worsening the financial hardships of farmers.”“Farmers are already facing an economic crisis, and the delay in compensation for previous losses has made their condition even more miserable,” the MLA added.Demanding immediate intervention, Dhaliwal urged the govt to announce compensation of Rs 50,000 per acre and ensure that relief funds reach farmers without delay.MSID:: 130040534 413 |
