RAJKOT: A video purportedly showing Bhavnagar police personnel beating a murder accused at public places during a crime reconstruction exercise went viral on social media on Saturday. The accused, Faizal alias Khatki Lakhani, 25, was arrested by Nilambaug police on Friday in connection with the murder of his live-in partner, Kajal Bariya.Police said Faizal assaulted Bariya and kicked her repeatedly during a quarrel, causing severe injuries to her kidneys. She died while undergoing treatment at a hospital on Thursday.According to police, Faizal has a history of multiple offences involving violence and had recently been released on bail with Bariya’s help. The couple was reportedly living on the footpath and inside the GSRTC depot.Police said Faizal suspected Bariya of having an affair, which led to an argument that turned violent.Following his arrest, police took him to the spot on Friday for reconstruction of the crime. It was during this procedure that the accused was allegedly beaten by police personnel, as seen in the viral video. When contacted, Nilambaug police inspector DP Unadkat defended the action, describing Faizal as a “notorious person”.He said the accused had continued his criminal activities after being released on bail and claimed that the beating was intended to send a message that crimes against women would be taken seriously.“We beat him to set an example that crime against women will be taken seriously and nobody else dares to commit such a crime,” Unadkat said.
