Silchar: Delays in restoring Rangirkhal, a key drainage channel, have raised fears of monsoon waterlogging. The Nagarik Swartha Raksha Sangram Parishad said reviving Rangirkhal is vital for Silchar’s drainage system. “If Rangirkhal survives, Silchar survives,” members said, blaming years of neglect, indiscriminate waste dumping and slow restoration work. The drain, running through Lakhipur Road, Shibbari, Silchar Bypass and nearby areas, is clogged with plastic, household waste and debris, activists said.Parishad general secretary Haridas Dutta said state govt sanctioned restoration in 2025 from Malugram to Silchar Civil Hospital, including desiltation and widening, at Rs 2.5 crore. Residents said work remains slow despite the rainy season. Project officials cited continuous rainfall, saying excavators and extra manpower have been deployed. The Parishad flagged encroachments that have narrowed the drain, increasing flood risk. Silchar Municipal Corporation executive engineer Baibhab Dutta warned of a Rs 50,000 fine and legal action for dumping, and said fencing is planned. A Rs 120-crore retaining-wall proposal is awaiting approval.
