NEW DELHI: A Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel was allegedly assaulted and attacked with swords during protests in Delhi’s Connaught Place area on Tuesday, prompting police to register an FIR and launch an investigation into the incident. An alleged video of the incident shows a mob assaulting a man when the RAF personnel intervened to rescue him. A scuffle reportedly broke out between the personnel and the protesters, following which the RAF personnel was separated from his colleagues. The video appears to show two men attacking him with swords while another person was carrying a stick. The personnel is seen running to escape, but the mob allegedly chased him. Another purported video shows the RAF personnel trying to flee before someone trips him, causing him to fall. He is then allegedly surrounded and beaten by the mob. A second RAF personnel who attempted to rescue his colleague was also allegedly assaulted. Blood could be seen on the injured personnel’s face in the video. Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Sachin Sharma confirmed the incident and said that an FIR has been registered. Meanwhile, Delhi Police have registered 10 FIRs in connection with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests across the New Delhi district. Officials said four FIRs were registered at Parliament Street police station, three at Connaught Place, and one each at Mandir Marg, Barakhamba Road and Kartavya Path police stations. The cases relate to different incidents reported during the protests, with investigations currently underway. Police alleged that during Monday’s protest, demonstrators displayed unruly, aggressive and violent behaviour and refused to disperse despite repeated warnings and lawful directions. Investigators are also probing whether the violence at Jantar Mantar was part of a pre-planned conspiracy and are examining more than 250 videos to identify those involved. The FIRs have been registered under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Arms Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act. One FIR relates to the alleged unauthorised use of a drone during the Parliament session, while another concerns an alleged conspiracy behind the violence. Two other FIRs pertain to alleged obstruction of government work, assault on police personnel and damage to public property.
