Akola: An undated video from the Govt Medical College (GMC) in Akola showing a tribal woman carrying her ailing husband on her back as she moved between hospital departments in search of treatment has been going viral on social media since Saturday morning, prompting the institution’s dean to order an internal inquiry. The footage showed the woman, accompanied by a small child, moving from one department to another without being provided a stretcher or wheelchair by hospital staff. The video drew sharp criticism over patient care at the govt-run facility.GMC Dean Dr Sanjay Sonune, who is currently on official tour, said the woman arrived after OPD hours and did not approach hospital staff or the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) for a stretcher or wheelchair. He said she also did not complete the required documentation, including Aadhaar details, before seeking treatment.Dr Sonune said the incident was being used to target the institution. Dr Sonune said: “Attempts are being made by certain elements to defame the institution. The voices in the video can be heard asking people not to record.”On the woman’s conduct, Dr Sonune said her unfamiliarity with hospital procedures may have been a factor. Dr Sonune said: “The woman appeared unaware of procedures, possibly due to lack of education. Patients are required to complete certain formalities before receiving treatment.”Acknowledging the seriousness of the matter, he confirmed a probe was set in motion. Dr Sonune said “We have ordered an internal inquiry to determine whether there was any negligence at any level. The concerned officials are looking into the matter.”Similar concerns about the availability of stretchers and wheelchairs at GMC Akola have been raised in the past, with relatives seen transporting patients between departments on earlier occasions as well.
