Gandhinagar: Chief minister Bhupendra Patel and governor Acharya Devvrat presided over a ‘Vibhajan Vibhishika Diwas’ (partition tragedy commemoration) programme in Amreli on Friday on the eve of India’s 80th Independence Day. A two-minute silence was observed in memory of those who lost their lives during the Partition.CM Patel said that just as we remember the heroes of the freedom struggle, it is also our moral responsibility to pay tribute to the millions of innocent people who became victims of the tragedy of partition. The dignitaries also visited a special exhibition depicting the struggle of the Partition.Addressing the gathering, governor Devvrat said the “inhuman atrocities and horrific scenes” of the 1947 Partition remained deeply painful.“Lakhs of children, women and elderly people lost their lives, homes and families during the upheaval,” he said.Referring to Lord Ram’s victory over Lanka, the Governor said that one’s mother and motherland were greater than heaven.He paid tribute to families displaced during Partition who overcame severe hardships, rebuilt their lives and contributed to the country’s development through their hard work.
