Varanasi: A 23-year-old student of the Udai Pratap Autonomous College in the city was shot on campus, allegedly by a senior, Friday afternoon. The accused escaped after the crime, sparking tension and prompting heavy police deployment. Surya Pratap Singh, a fourth-semester BS Mathematics student from Ghazipur, was in the Social Science faculty corridor when Manjeet Chauhan, an MA second-year student, allegedly opened fire. Singh fell on the ground as Chauhan and his aides fled. Upon receiving information, police reached the spot and rushed Singh to the BHU Trauma Centre, where he was declared dead. Enraged by the incident, other students ransacked the college furniture and raised slogans against the principal. In view of the seriousness of the situation, forces from several police stations and the PAC have been called in, and the campus has been turned into a cantonment.TNN
