The turnaround of Uttar Pradesh had started in 2017 onwards when Yogi Adityanath was sworn in as chief minister. Immediately, he understood what the state was lacking and what was needed hence the focus was on development of infrastructure. It was his vision and sustained efforts in nine years that UP has emerged as one of India’s leading states in infrastructure development and connectivity, transforming itself into a major economic and logistics hub. Over the past few years, the state has witnessed unprecedented investment in roads, expressways, airports, railways, urban transport, and digital infrastructure. The state’s expanding expressway network, including the Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, Gorakhpur Link Expressway, and the under-construction Ganga Expressway, has significantly reduced travel time, improved logistics efficiency, and enhanced regional connectivity. These world-class corridors are connecting eastern, western, central, and southern parts of the state, facilitating faster movement of goods and people while attracting industrial investment along their routes.Air connectivity has also expanded rapidly with the development of new airports and the strengthening of existing aviation infrastructure. The state now boasts multiple international airports, including Noida International Airport, which is set to become one of Asia’s largest airports and a major gateway for trade, tourism, and investment. Simultaneously, railway modernization, dedicated freight corridors, and enhanced station infrastructure are improving passenger convenience and cargo movement across the state.Urban connectivity has received equal attention through metro rail projects in cities such as Lucknow, Kanpur, and Agra, helping reduce congestion and promote sustainable transportation. Ring roads, flyovers, smart city initiatives, and integrated transport systems are reshaping urban mobility and improving the quality of life for millions of residents. In addition, extensive rural road construction under various central and state government programmes has enhanced connectivity to villages, ensuring better access to markets, healthcare, education, and government services.Moving towards becoming a state with 22 expressways (7 operational, 5 under construction, and 10 proposed), compared to just 2 in 2017. As much as 55 percent of the country’s total expressway network passes through Uttar Pradesh. Approximately 5,300 hectares of land across 27 locations in 26 districts have been identified for industrial development along these expressways.Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) is currently successfully operating the Agra-Lucknow Expressway (302 km), Purvanchal Expressway (341 km), Bundelkhand Expressway (296 km), Ganga Expressway (594 km) and Gorakhpur Link Expressway (91 km). Over the last decade, the state has invested heavily in world-class road infrastructure to enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, improve logistics efficiency, and attract investment. These expressways are not merely transportation corridors; they are catalysts for economic transformation, regional development, industrial expansion, tourism growth, and employment generation.Today, Uttar Pradesh has the largest operational expressway network in India, connecting major urban centres, industrial hubs, agricultural regions, and emerging economic clusters. The state’s expressway-driven development model is playing a critical role in its ambition of becoming a one-trillion-dollar economy.Yamuna Expressway: Western Gateway to UPThe 165-kilometre Yamuna Expressway was one of the earliest large-scale expressway projects in the state. Connecting Greater Noida with Agra, it significantly reduced travel time between Delhi-NCR and Agra from nearly four hours to less than two hours. The expressway has transformed regional connectivity and stimulated economic activity along the corridor. Industrial townships, logistics facilities, educational institutions, and residential developments have emerged in its vicinity. It has also strengthened tourism by improving access to the Taj Mahal and other heritage destinations in Agra.Agra-Lucknow Expressway: Connecting the heartlandsThe 302-kilometre Agra-Lucknow Expressway established a high-speed link between western Uttar Pradesh and the state capital. The six-lane expandable expressway has reduced travel time between Agra and Lucknow from nearly six hours to about three and a half hours. The corridor has improved movement of people and goods while supporting industrial development across central Uttar Pradesh. A notable feature of the expressway is its emergency airstrip, capable of accommodating fighter aircraft during emergencies, highlighting its strategic significance.Purvanchal Expressway: Transforming Eastern Uttar PradeshThe 341-kilometre Purvanchal Expressway connects Lucknow to Ghazipur and serves as a vital growth corridor for eastern Uttar Pradesh. Historically, many districts in this region lagged behind in industrial development and connectivity. The expressway has significantly improved access to markets, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and investment opportunities. It is expected to attract manufacturing units, food-processing industries, warehousing facilities, and logistics parks, thereby creating jobs and accelerating economic development in the Purvanchal region.Like the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, it also includes an emergency airstrip for defence purposes.Bundelkhand Expressway: Transforming the RegionThe 296-kilometre Bundelkhand Expressway is a transformative project for one of Uttar Pradesh’s most historically underdeveloped regions. Connecting Chitrakoot to Etawah, it links Bundelkhand with the broader expressway network of the state. The expressway is expected to boost industrialization, improve access to markets, and create employment opportunities. Its strategic importance has increased further due to its proximity to the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, which aims to establish the state as a major centre for defence manufacturing and aerospace industries.Improved connectivity is also expected to support agriculture, tourism, and small-scale industries across the Bundelkhand region.Ganga Expressway: India’s Longest State ExpresswayThe Ganga Expressway is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects being undertaken in India. Upon completion, the approximately 594-kilometre expressway will connect Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj in eastern Uttar Pradesh.Passing through several districts, the expressway will provide seamless east-west connectivity across the state and significantly reduce travel time between western and eastern Uttar Pradesh. The project will integrate agricultural regions, industrial centres, and urban markets into a unified economic corridor. The Ganga Expressway is expected to stimulate investments in logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, agro-processing, and commercial development. It will also improve connectivity to major religious and cultural destinations, including Prayagraj, thereby strengthening tourism and pilgrimage-related economic activities. The project includes provisions for future expansion and modern infrastructure facilities, making it a cornerstone of Uttar Pradesh’s long-term development strategy. “594km-long Ganga Expressway will provide historic strength to the state’s connectivity and will become a strong base for industrial, agricultural, and logistics activities.” CM Yogi Aditynath.Gorakhpur Link Expressway: Strengthening Regional ConnectivityThe Gorakhpur Link Expressway will connect Gorakhpur with the Purvanchal Expressway, creating a seamless transportation network across eastern Uttar Pradesh.
