Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of residential rooftop solar installations in the country in June 2026 under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, according to the state govt.Officials said 71,888 residential rooftop solar systems were installed during the month, the highest monthly figure achieved by any state under the scheme. The state has received 10.89 lakh applications so far, while 6.36 lakh residential rooftop solar systems have been installed.“Uttar Pradesh has consistently recorded the highest monthly installations in recent months. Based on the current pace, it is expected that the state will overtake Maharashtra by the end of July in cumulative residential rooftop solar installations. Gujarat currently leads the country in total installations,” said an official.According to official data, Uttar Pradesh has installed more than 2,148 MW of residential rooftop solar capacity. Subsidies exceeding Rs 5,500 crore have been transferred directly to beneficiaries under the scheme.The govt said more than 7,000 companies and vendors are engaged in the sector, generating more than 80,000 direct and indirect jobs. Residential rooftop solar systems in the state are estimated to produce around 96 lakh units of electricity daily. Officials also said the sector generates business worth more than Rs 40 crore a day while reducing the need for about 9,000 acres of land compared with large ground-mounted solar power projects.
