GURGAON: Nuh Police have arrested the groom and booked four Thar drivers after a video showing wedding guests sitting and standing on the roofs of moving vehicles went viral on social media. Police said the action was initiated after Sub-Inspector Yashpal, posted at Nagina police station, came across the video during patrolling and law-and-order duty in Mandikhera village on June 7. According to police, the video showed the wedding procession of Aqib, a resident of Nai Nangla village, travelling towards Chandeni village. “Several youths could be seen perched on the roofs of Thar SUVs while the vehicles were being driven at high speed on public roads,” an officer said. Investigators identified the vehicles seen in the footage and found that the drivers were allegedly allowing passengers to sit and stand on the roofs while driving. Police said the act endangered not only the occupants but also other road users. A police team subsequently reached Nai Nangla village, but the wedding procession had already left. “During the inquiry, locals stated that the groom had insisted on travelling on the vehicle roofs, saying that a wedding was a once-in-a-lifetime occasion,” the officer added. Based on the preliminary investigation, a case was registered against Aqib and the four vehicle drivers under relevant provisions of law. Officials said the groom has since been arrested in the case. Police took suo motu cognisance of the viral video and launched an investigation. This is the second such action by Nuh Police in recent weeks. Earlier, a similar case was registered at Tauru Sadar police station after dangerous stunts during a wedding procession came to light. Police said the crackdown was aimed at curbing reckless behaviour on roads and ensuring compliance with traffic rules. Officials warned that dangerous stunts and acts that jeopardise public safety during weddings or other celebrations would invite strict legal action. The district police have appealed to residents to follow traffic regulations and avoid practices that could put lives at risk.
