UP govt sanctions 604cr for revamp of 3,126 primary schools

Lucknow: UP govt has allocated Rs 604 crore for reconstruction of 3,126 primary and upper primary schools across the state. Approved under the Centre’ project approval board (PAB), the first instalment of Rs 302 crore has been released by the basic education department.

In a set of directives to all basic education officers (BSAs), director general of school education (DGSE) Monika Rani stated that funds will replace unsafe and dilapidated school buildings across the state and improve learning infrastructure for thousands of students. The schools that will be repaired have been identified through surveys and technical verification.

According to the order, of the 3,126 schools, 2,243 are primary schools while 883 upper primary schools. The govt has allocated Rs 344 crore and Rs 259.9 crore for strengthening primary and upper primary schools respectively. The govt has released 50% of the allocated amount in the first instalment. Each primary school will be upgraded at a cost of Rs 15.4 lakh, while upper primary schools will get Rs 29.4 lakh for reconstruction.

Rani stated that the new buildings will be constructed according to prescribed technical standards, including earthquake-resistant designs and accessibility provisions. The refurbished primary schools will include two classrooms, an office room, corridor facilities, ramps and internal electrification, while upper primary schools will have four classrooms along with enhanced infrastructure for students and teachers.

The govt has made the School Management Committees (SMCs) accountable for management of funds and adherence to quality standards. Strict monitoring, including regular inspections, digital progress updates, and the use of geo-tagged photographs, will be done to track construction work.
