Agartala: The death of an undertrial prisoner at Tripura’s Central Correctional Home on Sunday prompted his family to demand an independent probe, claiming that he had appeared healthy just two days earlier.The deceased was identified as Pranab Pal, a fish trader from Hairmara in Agartala. According to his family, he was arrested in connection under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act after police found cough syrup bottles from a fish consignment linked to him.Pal was questioned following the seizure and later remanded in judicial custody. A relative said family members visited him two days ago and found no signs of illness.

“We are in disbelief at the news of his death. Everything seemed fine during our last visit, which has raised our suspicions,” he said.Officials of the Central Correctional Home said Pal suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday morning and was immediately taken to Bishalgarh Hospital. They said CCTV footage was available to corroborate the sequence of events leading to his hospitalisation. The family, however, rejected the explanation and refused to accept the body, which was kept at Agartala Govt Medical College.
