Bengaluru: An 83-year-old man, unable to walk because of gangrene, was charred to death in a fire at his house in Thimmarayappa Circle near Kengeri in west Bengaluru early Thursday.Mylarappa, the victim, stayed with his grandson, a labourer, in a small house located in a tenement. The adjacent houses were occupied by other members of his family.

Police said Mylarappa was sleeping in a 10x5sqft room Wednesday night. Around 2.15am, residents saw smoke coming out from the room and alerted the family. Ramya, granddaughter of Mylarappa, told police she received a call from a relative, Bhagyamma, around 2.20am, who informed her about the fire. Ramya, who stayed in the adjacent house with her husband, Kumar, rushed outside. With the help of family members in the tenement and neighbours, they doused the flames by pouring water with buckets.Kumar climbed the building, broke the asphalt sheets on the roof and entered the house to find Mylarappa dead.Ramya said her grandfather had gangrene and his left leg was cut by doctors.
