The proposed centre is expected to encourage more farmers to take up horticulture, generate employment and strengthen the local economy. It will function as a one-stop knowledge hub, offering live demonstrations of advanced cultivation practices across fruits, vegetables and flowers, and providing hands-on, on-site training after developing a horticulture farm. The initiative aims to motivate farmers to increase production and diversify crops. It also seeks to help farmers shift from traditional crops such as maize and oilseeds to higher-value horticulture crops, with the objective of doubling farmers’ income in the shortest possible time.Dr Fakruddin said the centre will aid the development of new fruit and vegetable varieties, expand horticultural acreage, promote agro, fruit and vegetable processing start-ups, and drive crop diversification by encouraging high-yield, climate-resilient alternatives.MP Bose said the university has responded positively and that his govt is ready to support the varsity by providing land and other assistance.
