Pune: A truck driver (42) and his 70-year-old co-passenger were killed, while the latter’s daughter suffered injuries after their truck crashed into a stationary dumper near the Wakad bridge on the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass in the early hours of Saturday.The Hinjewadi police have registered a case of causing death by negligence against the dumper driver for allegedly leaving the heavy vehicle parked on the roadside in a manner that led to the fatal accident.The deceased have been identified as truck driver Pandharinagar Bandekar of Sangli and passenger Nivrutti Pawar of Kolhapur. Pawar’s daughter, Kalpana Kavade (40) of Bhiwandi, is undergoing treatment. Her husband, Sanjay Kavade (42), escaped with minor injuries.Police sub-inspector Vikas Taktode of the Hinjewadi police told TOI that complainant Sanjay Kavade, his wife and father-in-law had taken a lift in the truck from Bhiwandi on Friday night to travel to Kolhapur for a family function. They reached the Wakad bridge around 1.30am on Saturday, when the truck rammed into a dumper parked on the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass.“Bandekar and Pawar died on the spot, while the complainant’s wife sustained injuries,” Taktode said.He said the police found that the dumper driver had parked the vehicle without placing a warning triangle a few metres behind it and had also failed to switch on the parking blinkers. The alleged negligence led to the fatal accident.“The accident caused traffic congestion on the bypass. We shifted the damaged vehicles off the road and restored traffic. We have identified the dumper driver and will take him into custody soon,” Taktode said.
