Two held after fair ride collapse kills inspector | Chandigarh News

Chandigarh: Police have arrested two men on the charges of culpable homicide following a fairground attraction collapse that killed a police inspector and injured 12 others at the Surajkund fair.The arrests of Mohammad Shakir and Nitesh, identified as the operators responsible for the machinery, come as authorities establish a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the mechanical failure that turned a rescue effort into a tragedy. Inspector Jagdish Prasad died while attempting to evacuate visitors trapped in the wreckage of the swing after it broke apart on Saturday.

Criminal Charges and ArrestsFollowing the incident, Faridabad police detained Mohammad Shakir, proprietor of Himachal Fun Care Company, and Nitesh, an associate from Uttar Pradesh. The two face charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Investigators are currently examining the roles of other individuals involved in the installation and maintenance of the equipment on the fair premises.High-Level InvestigationHaryana director general of police (DGP) Ajay Singhal has ordered the formation of a three-member SIT to conduct a formal inquiry into the safety lapses. The team will operate under deputy commissioner of police (Crime) Mukesh Malhotra. An assistant commissioner-level officer will head the day-to-day probe. The investigation will focus on whether the “Himachal Fun Care Company” adhered to required safety certifications and weight limits.Heroism and Casualty ReportDGP Singhal described the death of inspector Prasad as an “irreparable loss” to the department, noting that the officer was killed while performing a “commendable effort” to save lives. The state has pledged full financial assistance to Prasad’s family, besides guaranteed employment for an eligible member of his family under the department’s compassionate policy.Status of the InjuredOf the 12 people injured, which included several female officers, five have been discharged from the hospital.
