Silchar: Four alleged drug peddlers, including a mother and her son, were arrested in separate anti-narcotics operations in Assam’s Sribhumi and Cachar districts on Monday. Police seized heroin, ganja and suspected stolen electronic goods.In the first operation, Sribhumi police raided a house at Girishganj near the India-Bangladesh border following a specific intelligence input. During the search, police recovered 1.3 grams of suspected heroin packed in eight small vials and one medium-sized vial. The accused, identified as Hena Begum, 40, and her son Kawsar Ahmad, 24, were arrested on the spot.Police also seized 500 empty plastic vials, 120 empty tobacco containers, 13 mobile phones, a desktop computer and two cameras from the house. Investigators suspect the duo was running a retail drug distribution network and allegedly exchanged narcotics for stolen electronic items or purchased such goods for resale. The recovered electronic items are being verified.In a separate operation, Cachar police intercepted a scooter on Ashram Road in Silchar based on intelligence inputs. A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of 2.113 kg of ganja, following which the two occupants were arrested. The scooter used to transport the contraband was impounded.Police have registered cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in both incidents. Police said investigation is on to identify the source of the seized contraband and trace the wider drug supply network.Reiterating its resolve to curb drug trafficking, Cachar Police said in a statement on social media that it remained “vigilant, determined and relentless” in its fight against the drug menace.
