Agartala: Tripura Police have enhanced security and traffic arrangements for the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations.DGP GS Rao said the force was equipped to ensure peaceful celebrations across the state, adding that security would be strengthened this year amid the large number of puja events and expected crowds.So far, 2,905 puja committees have registered with the authorities, though the number may rise as more applications are received. Last year, 2,928 Durga Puja celebrations were organised.Around 10,000 police and Tripura State Rifles personnel were deployed statewide last year, and the number is expected to increase this year.The police will deploy additional mobile patrol vehicles and install 180 CCTV cameras at various locations. Police will also set up 169 watchtowers at key sites. Agartala, which is expected to host around 450 pujas, will receive heightened attention. With crowds gathering for holiday shopping, 29 additional bike patrols have been deployed in high-footfall areas.Rao said five extortion-related cases have been registered so far, compared with two during the same period last year. He said strict legal action would be taken against such incidents.The arrangements include parking zones, no-entry areas, designated stopping points and transport plans. Permits will be issued to vehicles providing essential services. Police are also working to establish a green corridor for ambulances and fire-service vehicles.No-entry restrictions will be enforced in the city from 5 pm to 1 am during the festive period. A traffic control room will operate round the clock. Security has also been strengthened at railway stations, with plainclothes personnel deployed to monitor activities.Police will increase the deployment of women personnel. Authorities have also launched a targeted anti-drug campaign across Tripura, Rao said.
