India does not lack awareness of hair loss. Over 200 million Indians live with it, and for most, the signs are difficult to ignore. On the occasion of this Hair Loss Awareness Month, Traya co-founder Saloni Anand, argues that what Indians lack is the kind of awareness that changes anything.

“Hair loss is the body telling you something internal needs attention. Until we start treating it as a health signal, awareness alone won’t change outcomes,” said Anand.

Traya’s data exposes the awareness gap

The distinction Anand draws is between knowing the fact and understanding the signal. The fact, thinning hair, is universally noticed and vigorously acted upon; India’s vast market of oils and remedies is proof of the action. The signal, what the loss says about stress, sleep and gut health, goes almost entirely unread. Traya’s study across 5 lakh Indian men found high stress in 60% of hair loss cases and gut issues in 37%.

This is why awareness alone, in the conventional sense, changes so little. A man made more aware of his hair loss without understanding the broader factors that may accompany it may simply turn to another external solution, without examining what else may be contributing to the concern.

What action would look like

In Anand’s framing, awareness that leads to action means treating hair loss as a health signal: a prompt to examine how one is sleeping, what one’s stress is doing, how one’s digestion is behaving. It relocates the response from the shop shelf to the daily routine, encouraging men to examine the broader health and lifestyle factors that accompany hair loss.

Hair Loss Awareness Month runs through August. Anand suggests its success should be measured not in conversations started but in questions changed: fewer men asking which product, more men asking why. For 200 million Indians, that single substitution is the difference between a month of awareness and a month that mattered.
