Mohali: Residents of Phase 11 have demanded immediate relocation of the RMC (Resource Management Centre) point near Jagatpura. According to them, constant dumping has led to accumulation of heaps of garbage, pervasive stench and environmental pollution.A delegation led by councillor Amarjit Singh of Sector 65 met MC commissioner Sandeep Singh and MLA Kulwant Singh to press the case for shifting the RMC point to another location across the railway line. Residents also sought increase in garbage lifting until the site is relocated, especially before the onset of heavy rains. The delegation, which included former councillor Sukhwinder Singh Barnala and Welfare Association president Bakhshish Singh, said the RMC point receives a major share of the city’s garbage, resulting in large-scale accumulation of waste and a persistent foul smell. They urged authorities to stop dumping more garbage at the site and intensify waste clearance operations to prevent further deterioration.MLA Kulwant Singh assured that efforts are being made to resolve the issue on priority. He added that meetings were being held between officials of the municipal corporation and Gmada to identify an alternative site. He also spoke to officials on the spot and directed them to expedite the process.MC commissioner Sandeep Singh told delegation members that work on operationalising the Samgoli waste processing plant was progressing rapidly. He said discussions with Gmada for allotment of land to shift the RMC point were also underway and a decision was expected soon. The issue has also drawn the attention of mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana, who recently visited the RMC point after assuming office and acknowledged residents’ concerns.Deputy mayor Harpal Singh Channa, who inspected affected areas in phases 10, 11 and 48-C, acknowledged the problem and assured that the issue would be resolved soon.
