Thiruvananthapuram: The transport department will allow seven categories of modifications in vehicles, including colour, engine, chassis and body structure changes, subject to prior approval from the registering authority.Transport commissioner G Sparjan Kumar issued the order under Section 52 of MV Act and Rule 112 of Central Motor Vehicles Rules which said that only modifications permitted under existing rules can be carried out. Colours prohibited under the law cannot be used. The order warned that action will be taken against vehicles modified without prior approval.Replacement engines and chassis must be of equivalent capacity and from the same vehicle manufacturer. Fitting an engine from another vehicle model is prohibited, said the order. The department permitted fuel conversion using approved kits, changes to the propulsion system and conversion of vehicles into adapted vehicles. All approved modifications must be recorded in the vehicle’s registration certificate.Only original equipment manufacturers, their authorised dealers or workshops approved by the state govt can do such modifications. The registering authority will consider applications based on the standards prescribed by the vehicle manufacturer.
