Mumbai: Govt has constituted a state-level committee under the chief secretary to review areas vulnerable to human trafficking, particularly children, as well as preventive actions taken. The 11-member committee, which includes additional chief secretary (home) and the DGP, has to conduct at least one review meeting every quarter. According to a govt resolution issued on Wednesday, its mandate includes review of rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration actions, as well as effective law enforcement and prosecution. The panel’s formation came in the wake of Supreme Court voicing grave concerns over the “lackadaisical” approach of many states and UTs in implementing its 2025 judgment aimed at dismantling organised trafficking networks. Among its 2025 directives was formation of state-level monitoring committees. As per National Crime Records Bureau, 6,288 persons were reported to be trafficked, including 2,687 children, 6,043 were rescued, and 6,024 arrested for trafficking in 2023. —Vijay V Singh
