Panaji: To reduce road accidents caused by haphazard truck parking along the national and state highways and to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians, the traffic cell of Goa police said there was an urgent need to set up a dedicated truck terminus within industrial estates. In a letter to different departments, including PWD and the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), the traffic cell said the step was needed to prevent nuisance.Traffic cell said that there has been an increasing demand in logistic support for supply of raw material and transportation of finished goods, which is mostly done through heavy and multi excel trucks, trailers and container movers plying from neighbouring states.“In absence of any dedicated holding areas such as a truck terminus/truck parking complexes within the industrial area, these heavy vehicles are often seen/forced to be parked haphazardly along the national highways and other main roads, causing obstruction to the smooth flow of traffic and posing serious danger to motorists and pedestrian. Accidents involving such trucks parked along the road side have already been reported in the past,” traffic cell said.As per the Goa Causes and Analysis of Motor Vehicle Accidents and Wayside Amenities on Highways Scheme, 2021, the road owning agencies apart from several other amenities are required to provide “Traffic Aid Post” on national and state highways to control the road transportation traffic as well as to make immediate help available, the traffic cell said.Likewise, the Road Owning Agencies are also required to provide “Truck Parking Complexes/Truck Terminus” along national and state highways which shall be located along the Highway and on the outskirt of a city nearby to the highway.
