Ludhiana: The 101st Senior Athletic Championship commenced at the Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana, drawing top senior athletes from various districts across Punjab. Organised by the Punjab Athletic Association, the state-level tournament features both boys and girls competing in a wide array of track and field events.To accommodate the prevailing weather conditions, the first day of the championship was split into morning and evening shifts, starting with track and field events. Organising committee officials reported excellent overall participation, noting that winners will receive medals, certificates, and trophies to boost their confidence for upcoming competitions.Track and field resultsThe opening day delivered highly competitive finishes across multiple men’s track and field events. In the 3,000m steeplechase open event, Bikram Singh from Patiala secured first place, followed by Gurpinder Singh from Muktsar in second, and Sukhwinder Singh from Fazilka in third. The 1,000m run open event saw Lovepreet Singh from Fazilka finish first, Simran Singh from Jalandhar take second, and Sahil from Sangrur claim third. For the 110m hurdles, Tarundeep Singh Bhatia from Ludhiana won the top spot, with Sehajdeep Singh from Jalandhar and Pankaj Pal from Fazilka finishing second and third, respectively. In the shot put open competition, Dhanveer Singh from Jalandhar clinched first place, while Prabhkirpal Singh from Mansa took second and Devinder Singh from Patiala finished third.The women’s categories also produced strong performances on the first day of the championship. In the 100m hurdles, Sumandeep Kaur from Kapurthala claimed first place, Tasneem Kaur from Barnala secured second, and Alfa’s Kaur from Fazilka finished third. The triple jump event concluded with Niharika Vashisht from SAS Nagar winning the event, Arshdeep Kaur from Ludhiana taking second, and Jasleen Kaur from SAS Nagar placing third. Additionally, the discus throw competition ended with Jasmeek Kaur Jagdeo from Malerkotla finishing in first place, Divjot Kaur from Patiala earning second, and Tanu Poonia from Jalandhar taking third.
