Puri: One tourist drowned while another sustained critical injuries after 5 tourists were swept into the sea at Light House beach in Puri on Tuesday. “The deceased has been identified as Sumit Kumar Gupta (22) of Ranipur in Uttar Pradesh. The injured tourist was identified as Anish Singh (25) of Sushta area in Bihar,” a police officer said.According to lifeguard A Rameswar, the tourists were bathing in front of the Light House when a strong wave and rip current swept 5 of them into the sea. Hearing their cries for help, lifeguards rushed into the water and rescued all five tourists.The rescued tourists were brought ashore and shifted to Puri district head quarter hospital by ambulance. After examination, doctors declared Sumit dead, while Anish, who was critically injured, was admitted for treatment. The other three tourists were reported to be in stable condition. Police seized Sumit’s body and sent it to the hospital for postmortem.
