Mangaluru: As torrential rain continued to lash parts of Dakshina Kannada, Mundaje in Belthangady taluk recorded the district’s highest rainfall of 379mm during the 24 hours ending at 8.45am Sunday. Though the intensity of rain subsided across the district Sunday, Nethravati and Kumaradhara rivers continued to flow close to the danger mark. The district received an average of 100.6mm rainfall during the period, while Mangaluru city received comparatively less rain.Kalmanja in Belthangady taluk recorded 318mm rainfall and Nellikaru 207mm.A search operation was launched for a 48-year-old man suspected to have fallen into a stream at Panchakodi in Rayi village of Bantwal taluk Saturday night.Man swept away in streamPolice suspect that Jeevan Pinto, 48, a resident of Panchakodi House in Rayi, slipped while crossing a footbridge and was swept away in the swollen stream while walking to his father-in-law’s house located a short distance from his residence. Fire and rescue department personnel and Bantwal Rural police are continuing efforts to trace him.
Heavy rainfall on Saturday had caused the Nethravati river to swell to critical levels, but water levels subsided by Sunday morning, easing concerns in Panemangaluru and adjoining areas. Several residents of Aladka in Panemangaluru and nearby areas on the banks of the Nethravati shifted to safer places.Floodwaters entered several houses and establishments in Bantwal and Belthangady. According to the District Disaster Management Authority, two houses were damaged in Dakshina Kannada due to heavy rain in the past 24 hours.Mescom reported damage to 36 electric poles.
