Gandhinagar: The counting of votes for Gujarat’s massive local body elections is set to begin this Tuesday. Following polling day on Sunday, all eyes are now on the results that will determine the leadership across 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats.While municipal corporations saw a collective voter turnout of 55.1%, participation in rural and semi-urban areas was significantly more robust. The State Election Commission reported that taluka panchayats led the charge with a 67.26% turnout, followed closely by district panchayats at 66.64% and municipalities at 65.53%.The data revealed a clear urban-rural divide in engagement. In the municipal corporation category, Vapi recorded the highest enthusiasm with 72.29% of voters casting ballots. Conversely, Gandhidham saw the lowest participation at 46.03%. Ahmedabad recorded a turnout of 51.81%. Interestingly, most of the newly formed municipal corporations outperformed the state average for cities, with only Porbandar (48.84%) and Gandhidham falling below the 50% mark.
