Shanmughasundaram.JChennai: The Tamil Nadu govt has proposed to empower the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) to recruit staff for 25 corporations, 145 municipalities and 479 town panchayats across the state, bringing appointments to urban local bodies under a common selection mechanism.A Bill to amend the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (Additional Functions) Act, 2022, was passed in the Assembly on Tuesday.Unlike recruitment to many state govt services through TNPSC, appointments to urban local bodies have followed different mechanisms depending on the post and service, with recruitment powers distributed among the Directorate of Municipal Administration, municipal commissioners and local selection/appointment committees. The proposed amendment seeks to bring these recruitments under a common TNPSC-led mechanism, according to senior bureaucrats.Once the Bill receives the Governor’s assent, the govt can entrust recruitment for various posts in Chennai Corporation and other urban local bodies to TNPSC.“It is imperative to have a better and uniform method of recruitment of candidates for appointment to posts under urban local bodies in order to ensure a more efficient, professional and transparent recruitment process, which will enable the youth in rural and remote areas of the state to apply for such posts and get recruited,” said minister for human resources D Sarathkumar said in the statement of objects and reasons.The govt has therefore decided to entrust TNPSC with the recruitment of candidates for appointments in urban local bodies, he said. The Bill seeks to further expand the scope of the 2022 Act, which assigned additional functions to TNPSC, for this purpose.
