Coimbatore: Good quality groundnut prices at harvest could be around Rs 65-70 per kg in the state, according to a pre-sowing outlook issued by the Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC) of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies (CARDS). It said the harvest price for good quality black sesame is expected to be in the range of Rs 140-145 per kg while good quality cotton prices at harvest are expected to be at Rs 75-80 per kg.India is the second largest producer of groundnuts globally. During 2024-25, the crop recorded production of 119.42 lakh tonne from an area of 57.62 lakh hectares, with productivity of 2,073 kg per hectare. DEMIC noted that area under groundnut has increased by 3.17% from 2025 to 2026. Tamil Nadu is a key producer with about 3.15 lakh hectares under cultivation, production of 7.69 lakh tonne and productivity of 2,439 kg per hectare. Groundnut is cultivated year-round depending on rainfall and irrigation availability, though sowing is largely taken up between June and August in most districts.DEMIC-CARDS analysed sesame prices that prevailed in Sivagiri Regulated Market in Erode district over the past 25 years. Based on the findings, the harvest price for good quality black sesame is expected to be in the range of Rs.140-145 per kg. India remains the world’s largest producer of sesame, grown in both kharif and rabi seasons. With national output placed at 0.87 million tonne, Tamil Nadu is among the major producing states.India is a leading producer and exporter of cotton, ranking first globally in acreage and second in production and consumption. For 2025-26, cotton was cultivated in about 114.82 lakh hectares with production of around 49.455 lakh tonne and productivity of 431 kg per hectare. In Tamil Nadu, the area expanded to 1.02 lakh hectares, with production of 3.80 lakh tonne and productivity of 350 kg per hectare during 2024-25.
