Chennai: Three persons have been arrested by the city police in connection with the murder of an 80-year-old home-alone woman in a T Nagar apartment on Friday. Police recovered about eight sovereigns of gold and diamond jewellery, silver articles and ₹2,000 in cash and seized the two-wheeler used in the crime.The victim, Radha, wife of the late Krishnamoorthy, lived alone in an apartment on Kuppusamy Street in Pondy Bazaar. On Aug 13, her son, Ramji Yadav, took her to a dental clinic and dropped her home before returning to his residence in Besant Nagar.The following morning, a neighbour informed Ramji that repeated calls and knocks at Radha’s apartment had gone unanswered. Ramji used a spare key to enter the house and found his mother dead with injuries. Her gold chain, bangles, diamond earrings, gold ring, silver articles and cash were missing.Based on Ramji’s complaint, the Soundarapandianar Angadi police registered a case and launched an investigation.The investigation revealed that Menaka alias Ammu, 36, who had worked as Radha’s domestic helper for the past five months, had conspired with Mouli alias Chandramouli, 26, and Manikandan, 24, to rob the elderly woman after learning that she lived alone.Police said the trio entered the house on the evening of Aug 13, strangled Radha to death and fled with the jewellery and valuables.Investigators also found that Chandramouli had two previous criminal cases pending against him.The three accused were produced before a magistrate court on Friday and remanded to judicial custody.
