Honey Singh, who had disappeared from the spotlight for several years while battling addiction and bipolar disorder, reflected on his struggles during a recent podcast appearance.Speaking candidly with ABtalks about the years between 2011 and 2014, Honey Singh admitted that immense fame and financial success had completely changed him as a person. “I was not happy. I was at my peak in 2013 and 2014. I was not in my senses. My ideology was different at that time. When I made it, I used to walk differently, talk differently, and disrespect everyone. I used to think that I did it all. I even used to call myself God,” he confessed.The singer further admitted that drugs and arrogance pushed him into a dangerous mental state. “I was making money and getting successful at a very young age, and while doing that, I was also doing drugs. I was in a very demonic state of mind. I didn’t like that version of myself,” he added.
Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar tried to warn him
During the conversation, Honey Singh revealed that several Bollywood stars noticed his destructive lifestyle and advised him to change before it was too late. The rapper recalled interacting closely with actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, and Akshay Kumar during his meteoric rise in the industry. According to him, their grounded personalities left a lasting impression on him.“I don’t want to blame the entertainment industry for anything. I got the chance to share screen space with legends and have personal access to their lives at a very young age. People like Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, they are such simple people, there is no darkness in them,” he said.Honey Singh especially remembered Shah Rukh Khan repeatedly cautioning him about his habits. “They used to observe me and tell me to stay away from what I was doing because it was wrong. Especially Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar. Shah Rukh Khan told me many times, ‘This is going to spoil you, finish you, and destroy you,’” he revealed.
Honey Singh’s downfall after ‘Desi Kalakaar’
Honey Singh was at the height of his popularity following the success of tracks like ‘Desi Kalakaar’, but behind the scenes, his personal life was spiralling. The singer later revealed that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder while also struggling heavily with substance abuse. By 2017, things had become unbearable, leading him to step away from music and public life entirely.In an earlier interview with Lallantop, Honey Singh had spoken about the severity of his addiction, saying, “I was drowning in drugs and alcohol, smoking 12-15 joints and downing bottles. I abandoned my family, lost control. This one time, I got so high I bit a friend on his stomach eight times.”
Honey Singh’s comeback to music
After years away from the limelight, Honey Singh returned to the music scene in 2023 with ‘Kalaastar’, which served as a sequel to his hit track ‘Desi Kalakaar’ and featured Sonakshi Sinha. Since then, the rapper has focused on concerts, live tours, and fresh music releases.
