Kolkata: The lungs of a 58-year-old brain dead man from Kalyani will come to the rescue of a 61-year-old woman in Gurugram while his two kidneys will give a fresh lease of life to two women in Kolkata who are battling renal failure.Deceased donor Soumen Dasgupta’s corneas have been banked at Disha Eye Hospital. This third deceased donation within a week has put an impetus on organ donation pace that was on the back foot for weeks now. According to hospital sources, Dasgupta had suffered brain haemorrhage and was brought to Fortis Hospital Anandapur where he was declared brain dead. His family took the decision to donate his organs, honouring his lifelong commitment to helping others. Sources said his son, Soumyadeep, was a junior resident doctor at AIIMS Kalyani and is now preparing for higher studies. Having a doctor in the family made the procedure smooth.“My father always believed in helping those in need, and as his son and as a doctor, I felt that donating his organs was the most meaningful way to honour the person he was and the values he lived by. We hope that a part of him will continue to live on through the lives he has touched and that his legacy of compassion will inspire others to consider organ donation,” the son said.The hospital’s transplant coordinated with ROTTO (East). While matching recipients were found for the lungs and kidneys, no matching recipient could be found for the heart and the liver. The lungs were sent to Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, while one kidney was allocated to Fortis Hospital, Anandapur for a 39-year old woman and the second went to Command Hospital, Kolkata for a 30-year-old woman.Richa S Debgupta, executive vice president, chief of strategy, group head – ESG, and business head – Jaipur & Kolkata, Fortis Healthcare, said, “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the donor’s family for taking this courageous and selfless decision.”Hospital staff offered guard of honour to the deceased donor before his body was taken for his last rites. “We hope deceased organ donation movement gains momentum and no viable organ goes to waste,” said VM Swamy of Bengal Organ Donation Society.
