T’puram: A theft accused was admitted to ICU of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital (MCH) with serious internal injuries shortly after being remanded in judicial custody. Following a custodial assault allegation, an ACP-level probe was ordered into the circumstances under which he sustained the injuries.The case relates to the theft of a Yamaha RX 135 motorcycle reportedly stolen from the parking area of Rajadhani Bar, Fort, between Feb 11 and 16.In connection with the case, Jinu Baby of Kottayam was traced to Kochi and taken into custody by Kochi police before being handed over to Fort police on Feb 20. Another accused, Unni of Thiruvananthapuram, was arrested later by Fort police.Baby alleged that he was assaulted while in police custody during transit from Kochi to Thiruvananthapuram.Both accused were subsequently produced before court and remanded in judicial custody on Saturday. However, Poojappura jail authorities said Baby had injuries when he was brought to jail, prompting his immediate referral for medical examination at general hospital. He was later shifted to MCH and is undergoing treatment in the ICU with internal injuries, including kidney-related complications.Unni was also admitted to the MCH later and is currently undergoing treatment. Sources said the statements of both accused were recorded before the magistrate regarding the alleged assault. Police sources maintained that the accused had undergone medical examinations prior to being produced before court and that the Fort police personnel involved in the custody process had denied the allegation. “We are examining custody timeline to determine whether the injuries were sustained while in custody,” police said.
