Dibrugarh: In a major boost to urban infrastructure, state minister of transformation and development Rameswar Teli on Saturday inaugurated the long-awaited Railway Overbridge (ROB) at Sripuria in Tinsukia, ending years of traffic congestion and railway crossing woes for residents of the commercial town. The 720-metre-long bridge connecting AT Road and Sripuria, constructed at a total cost of Rs 65 crore, was built through a joint financial contribution from the Assam govt and Indian Railways. While the state govt contributed Rs 35 crore towards the project, Railways provided Rs 29 crore, making it a collaborative infrastructure milestone for the town. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Tinsukia MLA Pulak Gohain, Makum MLA Sanjoy Kishan, Tinsukia District Commissioner Sumit Sattawan, and hundreds of enthusiastic residents of Tinsukia town, who turned out in large numbers to witness the unveiling of a project.Speaking on the occasion, minister Rameswar Teli described the bridge as a transformative addition to the region’s infrastructure.“Tinsukia is the commercial lifeline of upper Assam, and this bridge will ensure that its growth is no longer held back by traffic bottlenecks. With this bridge open, vehicles will no longer be held up at frequent train crossings. It will reduce travel time, improve safety, and give a boost to trade and daily life in the town,” he said.Tinsukia, widely regarded as the commercial capital of upper Assam, has long struggled with severe traffic congestion at railway level crossings that bisect the town. The frequent closure of these crossings to allow trains to pass caused significant daily disruption to commuters, traders, and emergency services alike. The new ROB at Sripuria is expected to eliminate this bottleneck entirely by allowing uninterrupted vehicular movement over the railway tracks.MLA Pulak Gohain, addressing the gathering, said the bridge was a long-pending demand of the people of Tinsukia.“This is a proud moment for every resident of this town. We have fought for this bridge for years and today that dream has finally become a reality. This bridge will not only cut delays but also enhance emergency response times for ambulances and fire services. It is an important civic infrastructure that will help the town grow sustainably,” he said. The opening of the ROB is expected to significantly reduce travel time across key parts of the town, bring relief to thousands of daily commuters, and further consolidate Tinsukia’s position as the economic nerve centre of upper Assam.
