The state education commission chairman, Akunuri Murali, has recommended increasing the allocation for education to 15 per cent in the budget, he said

Hyderabad, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday said the state government would gradually increase allocation for education in the state budget up to 15 per cent from the present 8.22 per cent.

Speaking at the inauguration of ‘education week’ under the state government’s 99-day special action plan for development works here Monday evening, he said that he aims to see that the government schools earn the recognition of providing better education compared to private schools.

“The state government provided Rs 26,674 crores, 8.22 per cent in the state budget for education. We will increase this in the future,” he said.

The state education commission chairman, Akunuri Murali, has recommended increasing the allocation for education to 15 per cent in the budget, he said.

“But, we cannot allocate 15 per cent in a single day. The government has the responsibility for welfare programmes. We have increased allocation this year compared to last year. Next year, we will increase further. We will increase the allocation every year to 15 per cent,” he said.

He said about 19 lakh poor students study in 27,000 government schools in the state. About 1,05,000 teachers work in the government schools.

He pointed out that 38 lakh students study in 12,000 private schools in the state.

Reddy, who holds the education portfolio, also said the proposed scheme for students of government schools, providing milk and ragi malt, would be implemented from the next academic year.

Appreciating teachers who visited foreign countries to study the best practices in education, he said, even up to 500 teachers would be sent abroad annually so that such practices can be replicated in the state.

Highlighting the measures taken by the state government for teachers’ welfare, including pending promotions and transfers, he urged the teachers to strive to provide quality education to the students.
