Berhampur: A 45-year-old taxi driver in Berhampur was allegedly cheated of Rs 6.3 lakh by cyber fraudsters posing as insurance officials and promising to release the maturity amount of an old policy, police said. The victim lodged a complaint at the cyber police station on Friday, following which a case was registered and an investigation launched.According to police, the victim received a call from an unknown number in March. The caller, claiming to be an official of a private insurance company, told him an old policy was due to mature and that he would receive Rs 5 lakh after depositing Rs 1.6 lakh. Believing the claim, the driver transferred the money. He later received calls from different numbers demanding additional payments towards taxes, GST and processing fees to release the maturity amount.
