Krishnagiri: Sleuths from the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC) on Friday, arrested a tax officer in Hosur for demanding and taking a bribe of ₹1,00,000 from a local business owner.The arrested official has been identified as J Kalaiyarasan, state tax officer attached to the Hosur North-1 Circle in Krishnagiri district.According to DVAC officials, the complainant, Nambhi, approached the state tax office requesting officials to drop a pending GST DRC-1 tax demand notice issued to his business firm for the 2022-2023 financial year. He requested a favourable settlement of the assessment proceedings without the imposition of heavy penalties, for which Kalaiyarasan demanded a bribe of ₹1 lakh to process the request and rule in favour of the firm.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, Nambhi approached the Krishnagiri DVAC and lodged a formal complaint on Thursday. Acting on the complaint, anti-corruption officials registered a case and laid a trap the next day.They caught Kalaiyarasan red-handed while he was receiving the bribe from the complainant. The officer was immediately placed under arrest before being remanded to judicial custody.
