Panaji: Tata Power Company Ltd has formally applied for a power distribution licence for Goa.The company has petitioned the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC), which regulates the power sector for Goa, seeking a licence to distribute power to consumers in the state. At present, the state electricity department is the sole distribution licensee. The JERC, hearing the company’s petition, has, in an interim order, given it two months – until Aug – to comply with requirements under the regulation and has directed it to file a compliance report. At the hearing last month, the commission observed that the company hadn’t fully complied with requirements under the JERC regulations and granted it two months as a last opportunity to comply with the requirements under the regulation. An official said the company is not trying to take over the electricity department but wants to enter the power distribution business in parallel with the department. “Consumers will then have two options for electricity supply,” the official said.
