Chennai: Tamil Nadu graduate teachers federation has urged the state chief electoral officer to exempt teachers with severe ailments, including cancer, heart and kidney ailments, and pregnancy from poll duty.
In a representation, the federation urged the poll officials to allot poll duty within the assembly constituency of teachers where they work.
“On an average, teachers travel 50-100km while on poll duty in their neighbouring constituency. Assigning work within the same constituency will reduce travel,” said P Patric Rhymond, general secretary of the federation.
Around three lakh teachers from govt and govt-aided schools are deputed on poll duty.
“Election commission should ensure availability of food, drinking water, and other facilities for teachers on duty through the district administration,” he added.
