Tamil Nadu CM Vijay’s Karnataka visit to resolve Cauvery row cancelled

On August 3, Tamil Nadu CM Vijay was supposed to come to Bangalore, Karnataka to meet CM D K Shivakumar to discuss the long-drawn Cauvery Water dispute. The visit was termed as a historic moment to resolve the dispute. However, on Friday Shivakumar requested Vijay to cancel his visit saying the atmosphere is not right for the meeting.

Since the meeting was announced, several organisations have been protesting. Earlier the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) directed the Karnataka government to release 3500 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu. Karnataka Government challenged the order in the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) which upheld the CWRC order on Friday.

Karnataka says that there is a 60% deficit in reservoir inflows and irrigation has not started due to insufficient rainfall. Tamil Nadu on the other hand demanded more water than 3500 cusecs. Vijay is also under pressure from political parties in Tamil Nadu to call off the meeting. The DMK on Saturday has also moved to SC seeking urgent directions to compel Karnataka to release 3500 cusecs of water as decided by CWRC.
