T’puram: The family of a seven-year-old boy from Tamil Nadu consented to donate his organs after he was declared brain dead, giving a new lease of life to multiple patients across Kerala. The donor, Lokineni Yashwan, had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram after sustaining critical injuries in a road accident last week in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. Doctors declared him brain dead at 10.38am on Sunday following all mandatory medical evaluations.A total of six organs have been donated — both kidneys, both corneas, liver and heart valve. One kidney has been transported to Iqraa Hospital in Kozhikode through a specially arranged green corridor for transplantation into a 17-year-old patient from Kannur. An ambulance carrying the organ departed from the state capital, with traffic restrictions imposed along the route to ensure its swift and uninterrupted movement. The other kidney has been allocated to a patient at Thiruvananthapuram govt medical college. The liver will be transplanted into a recipient undergoing treatment at a private hospital here, while the heart valve has been earmarked for a patient at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST).Both corneas will be transferred to Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO), Thiruvananthapuram, where they will be used to restore vision to patients awaiting corneal transplantation.Yashwan suffered grievous injuries on June 29 after he was struck by an ambulance while crossing a road on his bicycle. He was initially admitted to a nearby hospital before being shifted to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram for advanced treatment. Despite intensive medical care, doctors were unable to save him.
